Most of the Metroplex sits on Blackland Prairie clay. It swells when it rains and shrinks hard in August, and anything set shallow moves with it. That is why the fence you drive past leans the same direction every spring.
We auger every post hole to 36 inches, below where the clay does most of its moving, set a galvanized steel post in wet-mixed concrete and clad it in cedar. You see wood. The ground sees steel.
Rails are screwed, not nailed, so a single board can be swapped in five minutes ten years from now. It costs a little more per foot than a bagged-mix post at 24 inches, and it is the whole reason we can stand behind the fence.
