Kitchens and staircases built in one shop in Hudson, for houses that will outlive us.

Two joiners, a 4,000 square foot shop, and eight or nine projects a year. Solid hardwood, hand-cut joints where they matter, and a drawing you sign before we buy the lumber.

Four of the nine we finished last year.

How a job runs

Most of our clients have never commissioned anything before. This is what it is actually like, including the money.

Sam Hollis and Ruth Vane. That's the whole company.

Sam trained under a stair builder in Vermont and still cuts every stringer by hand. Ruth came from architecture and does the drawings, the finish schedules, and the difficult conversations with contractors.

We buy white oak, walnut and ash from two mills in the Catskills and let it sit in the shop for a season before we touch it. We don't do MDF, we don't do veneer, and we don't do rush.

The shop: workbench, hand planes, a stack of oak boards drying
